No. 5 KCKCC Falters To No. 15 Iowa Western, 87-73

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Coming off a stellar overtime win the night before, the fifth-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team faced off against No. 15 Iowa Western Community College Saturday afternoon inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils hung tight with IWCC for the first half, but KCKCC would fall in the end 87-73, giving them their first loss of the season at 7-1.

Iowa Western CC improved to 2-2 on the year.

The Blue Devils led 8-7 in the first quarter before De'Jaria Guillroy made a basket to increase the lead to three at 10-7. Both teams went back and forth before an 8-5 run by Iowa Western ended the first quarter with the Blue Devils up 16-15. KCKCC would chip away and increase their lead by a little bit more, but Iowa Western hung in and grabbed a 24-22 lead with 6:12 remaining in the period. Leading 27-26, the Reivers scored seven unanswered points to take a 34-26 lead at the 2:09 mark. Guillroy would score three straight points for the Blue Devils, but Iowa Western's lead grew even more as they would take a 39-31 lead at halftime.

Tiaira Earnest hit a three-pointer to start the third quarter for KCKCC and the Blue Devils cut the deficit and trailed 43-40 with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter. Iowa Western would go on an 8-0 run before nearly holding a double-digit lead going into the fourth quarter. The Reivers led 57-49.

The game would sway away from KCKCC in the fourth quarter as Iowa Western's pressure and fast break offense gave them a 70-54 lead with 6:23 remaining. The lead was eventually too much for KCKCC to overcome as they would fall at the end 87-73.

Earnest led the team with 22 points, while Guillroy had 17 points and Ikia Elam added 16. Four different Blue Devils in Earnest, Mercer Roberts, Guillroy and Elam had five rebounds to lead the team.

The Blue Devils will take the Thanksgiving week off before returning to action on Nov. 30 when they host Washburn University's JV squad. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
