KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team was able to salvage a slow start, by defeating Washburn University's JV squad 50-37 Tuesday night inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils are now 8-1 overall on the season.
The Blue Devils earned the first points of the game as Ikia Elam made a basket. Washburn would tie the game at 2-2 at the 5:01 mark of the quarter before the shooting woes for both teams continued. KCKCC was able to close the quarter on a 7-0 run and took a 9-2 lead. KCK made two baskets early on in the second quarter, but the Ichabods fought back and cut the deficit at 13-8. Faith Putz would later drain a three-pointer giving the team a 16-8 advantage at the 3:15 mark, but Washburn countered and trailed 18-17 at halftime.
A strong second half would be in store for the Blue Devils as they increased their lead to 12 after a basket from Tiaira Earnest and Putz. Mercer Roberts would hit a three-pointer with 43 seconds left in the quarter and the Blue Devils took a 40-26 lead. KCKCC would have their biggest lead of the game at 50-34 after De'Jaria Guillroy made a three-pointer with 3:55 left in the game as the Blue Devils eased past the Ichabods.
Putz led the team with 14 points and Earnest earned a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
KCKCC returns to action tonight as they play at Metropolitan CC at 5 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
