MARY BRUNO BALLOU is in her ninth year as head coach but it took her just two years to make volleyball history at KCKCC’s by leading the Lady Blue Devils to a sixth place finish in the 2012 in the NJCAA Division II national tournament with a record of 32-8 was KCKCC’s first ever trip to the national tourney. For her efforts, Bruno was named District N Coach of the Year; was runnerup for Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year and received honorable mention from the American Volleyball Coaching Assn. for two-year coach of the year. She also earned KCKCC Coach of the Year honors in her first season in 2012 when the Blue Devils were 24-14.
In 2014, Bruno was named Jayhawk Co-Coach of the Year along with District N Coach of the Year after leading the Blue Devils (32-10) to a best ever three wins in the national tournament and a ninth place finish. Led by All-Americans Blair Russell (first team) and Lily Thornberg (second team), the Blue Devils had a record six players named to the All-Jayhawk and All-District N teams.
Earning a scholarship to Avila University, Mary played there for 2 years before an impending 4th knee surgery ended her career. She then transferred to Rockhurst when she graduated in 2010. While at Rockhurst, assisted the volleyball program headed by legendary coach Tracy Riezke. Bruno began her KCKCC career as a volunteer assistant in 2010, then was an assistant at Iowa Western before succeeding taking over the program in the summer of 2011. She has coached at the competitive club level with MAVS and KC Extreme for the last 12 years, over 20 of her former players have gone to Division 1 programs across the nation and 5 have earned All-American honors.
