Blue Devils Rally Past Palm Beach State, Come Up Short in Lake Land Clash

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team had a thrilling weekend during the Regular Season National tournament in Lake Worth, Fla. First edging Palm Beach State College 67-65 Oct. 31, before falling to No.18 Lake Land College 68-60 Nov. 1 at Erling Gym.

In the matchup against Palm Beach State, KCKCC overcame an eight-point halftime deficit with an impressive third-quarter performance, outscoring the Panthers 24-17. The Blue Devils capitalized on Palm Beach State's 23 turnovers, managing to score 10 steals despite shooting only 35.6% from the field. Yaslyn Gonzales led the scoring for KCKCC with 13 points, shooting 5 of 10 from the field and adding 2 assists. Amiyah Fulton provided a notable performance with 10 assists and contributed 8 points along with 2 steals. Kyara Bakker finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds, while Sandra Hracka dominated the boards with 12 rebounds and chipped in 6 points alongside 2 steals.

The following day, KCKCC faced off against No.18 Lake Land College in a closely contested game. Despite a strong defensive effort that included 10 steals and a brief lead in the third quarter, they were unable to fend off a fourth-quarter surge from the Lakers. The game started with Bakker scoring a quick layup to give an early 2-0 lead, but Lake Land quickly responded with a run that saw them take a 6-2 advantage. The first quarter ended in a deadlock at 11-11, with both teams exchanging leads throughout the game.

KCKCC made a strong push in the second quarter, briefly taking the lead at 16-13 thanks to a layup from Webb. However, the Lakers reclaimed the lead, and the quarter concluded with the Blue Devils trailing 25-24. The third quarter saw KCKCC rally again, with Gonzales hitting a three-pointer that momentarily put them ahead, but the Lakers responded effectively to regain control.

In the fourth quarter, KCKCC attempted to catch up, fueled by consistent scoring from Webb, who led the team with 14 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and adding five steals. Gonzales contributed 11 points and secured three rebounds, while Camara scored 10 points and collected five rebounds. Despite a late three-pointer from Bakker, the Blue Devils were unable to overcome the deficit, and the Lakers sealed the game with a final score of 68-60.

The next game for the Lady Blue Devils is against the University of Saint Mary Varsity Reserve team at 5 p.m. Nov. 6 at Breidenthal Court in the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
