Strong Opening Quarter Lifts Blue Devils Past Rend Lake

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team defeated Rend Lake College 60-50 Nov. 8 at Breidenthal Court. The Blue Devils won through a dominant first-quarter performance, establishing a 16-point lead early in the game.

KCKCC started strong, building a commanding 21-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Amiyah Fulton opened the scoring with a jumper at 8:08, while Yaslyn Gonzales and Saran Camara added key points in the paint. Camara remained pivotal throughout the period, scoring multiple baskets to extend the lead to 21-5 before Rend Lake closed the quarter with free throws. Despite committing nine turnovers, the Blue Devils controlled the boards with 11 defensive rebounds to maintain their advantage.

Rend Lake cut into the lead in the second quarter with a 15-9 scoring edge. Lovely-Tolbert led the visitors with seven points, including a three-pointer at 9:36 and a layup at 7:49. Gonzales answered with a three-pointer and a layup, assisted by Alexis Dukes. KCKCC entered halftime leading 30-23.

The Blue Devils extended their control in the third quarter, outscoring Rend Lake 16-10. Kyara Bakker started the momentum with a jumper at 9:05 and Camara added a three-pointer at 6:32 to make it 36-25. Gonzales fueled the offense with another three-pointer and multiple layups, assisted by Presley Simpson and Fulton, helping KCKCC take a 46-33 advantage heading into the fourth. Defensively, the Blue Devils forced several turnovers and maintained a double-digit lead throughout.

Rend Lake trimmed the deficit early in the fourth with a layup by Lovely-Tolbert at 8:07 but Fulton answered immediately to preserve KCKCC's cushion. Despite a late push from the Warriors, Alana Webb's fast-break layup at 2:58 extended the margin to 58-42. Rudd's free throws brought Rend Lake closer late, but the Blue Devils' defense held firm to close out the 60-50 victory.

The next game for the Lady Blue Devils is against North Arkansas at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Breidenthal Court.
