FOUR BLUE DEVIL LOSSES IN LAST 5 GAMES BY TOTAL OF 6 POINTS
If ever a team deserved a win, it's the Blue Devils of Kansas City Kansas Community College who open Division II regional playoffs at Johnson County Saturday at 4 p.m.
Nipped at home by Fort Scott 51-50 Wednesday, the Blue DevilS have gone right to the wire in dropping four of their last five games by a total of six points. Since losing at home to Johnson County 63-61, KCKCC has also lost to Highland 58-56, Hesston 61-60 and the 51-50 setback to Fort Scott – certainly not indicative of the competitiveness of a team that finished 0-10 in Jayhawk play and 6-24 during the regular season.
Beaten 84-74 at Fort Scott earlier, the Blue Devil men took the Greyhounds literally right to the wire. Down 51-50, the Blue Devils took a time out with eight seconds left and got an open 3-point shot from Clay Young that was rebounded by Marcus Allen, who was fouled with 0.4 seconds left. A freshman from Sumner Academy who joined the team at the semester break, Allen had the first of a one-and-one free throw attempt bounce off the rim and Fort Scott escaped with the No. 2 seed and a first round playoff bye.
Young led the Blue Devils with 16 points including three 3-pointers while Anthony
Ridley added 14 and Allen 12. Ridley also had eight rebounds and six assists in a standout floor game while Lucas Smith also had eight rebounds and Young seven.
