Volleyball Keep Perfect Season Alive

The Kansas City Kansas Community College volleyball team defeated Fort Scott Community College in four sets, 25-8, 25-12, 23-25, 25-16, Sept.10 at Breidenthal Court. This marked the first game in the KCKCC Fieldhouse since 2023 due to construction. The home team's serving was exceptional, recording 26 service aces, while Fort Scott struggled with 12 service errors.

KCKCC, ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA DII Women's Volleyball Poll, dominated the first set against Fort Scott, opening with a commanding 6-0 lead, thanks to a string of five consecutive service aces by Veronica Rolando. Fort Scott called a timeout at 6-0 to halt the momentum but the Blue Devils continued their run, extending the lead to 9-0 before Fort Scott finally got on the board. Veronica Rolando was instrumental, contributing multiple assists and service aces, while Tatianna Murray and Mayah Pridgett added critical kills to maintain the Greyhounds' advantage. Fort Scott managed a few points but could not overcome the strong start, with the set concluding at 25-8 in favor of the Blue Devils.

KCKCC started the second set with a strong performance, capitalizing on Fort Scott's service error to begin a 10-0 run. Veronica Rolando's service aces at 3-0, 4-0, and 5-0 highlighted the home team's early dominance, prompting a timeout from Fort Scott. Following the timeout, the Blue Devils continued to extend their lead, reaching 10-0 with contributions from Tatianna Murray and Valentina Rolando. Fort Scott attempted a comeback, closing the gap to 15-8. The set concluded with KCKCC sealing a decisive 25-12 victory, ending on a service error and a kill by Murray.

In the third set, KCKCC and the Greyhounds traded early points, with a notable kill by Fernanda Ocoro giving the home team an initial edge. Fort Scott responded with a decisive run, fueled by Jaiden Dixon's two consecutive service aces and a kill by Landry Price, taking the score to 8-4. KCKCC called a timeout at 11-5 after a series of attack errors allowed Fort Scott to extend their lead further. Despite a late surge from the Blue Devils, highlighted by Chavi Krehbiel's service aces narrowing the gap to 24-23, Fort Scott secured the set with a kill from Molly Murphy, ending the set 25-23.

The Blue Devils secured a decisive 25-16 victory in the fourth set against Fort Scott, driven by a series of strategic plays and errors by the visitors. After trailing 7-3 early on, KCKCC mounted a comeback starting with a kill by Pridgett and a service ace from Valentina Rolando to tie the game at 7-7. Veronica Rolando then played a pivotal role, delivering four service aces between points 13-14 and 13-19, which helped Kansas City pull ahead significantly. Despite a timeout called by Fort Scott at 13-17, the home team maintained their momentum, with Valentina Rolando continuing to contribute crucial points, including a key kill at 22-14, ultimately sealing the set with a service error from Fort Scott.

Veronica Rolando led the Blue Devils with 16 aces over 45 serves and added 19 assists, contributing to a total of 19 points. She set the new school record with service aces in a single match. Pridgett posted nine kills on 15 attempts, achieving a .467 attack percentage. Valentina Rolando recorded seven kills and contributed defensively with four digs and two total blocks. Krehbiel added four aces on eight serves, enhancing the team's serving performance.

The next match for the No. 2 Blue Devil Volleyball team is against the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens at 6:30 p.m. Sep. 17 at Breidenthal Court in the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
