No. 2 KCKCC Volleyball Sweeps on Community Heroes Night

The Kansas City Kansas Community College volleyball team swept Independence Community College with set scores of 25-11, 25-16, 25-15 Oct.1 at Breidenthal Court. KCKCC dominated with a .376 hitting percentage and recorded 45 kills while limiting the Pirates to a .012 hitting percentage and 16 kills. The home team also excelled in serving, tallying eight aces to secure the decisive victory. This victory keeps the KCKCC Blue Devils undefeated, making them one of only two undefeated teams, along with fellow KJCCC foe Cowley College.

KCKCC opened the first set strong, taking control early with a series of effective plays. Mayah Pridgett and Teagan Canady led the charge with multiple kills, pushing the Blue Devils to an 11-5 lead and prompting the Pirates to call a timeout. Despite service errors from both teams, KCKCC maintained its momentum, with Sanoma Hunter contributing crucial blocks and kills. The set concluded decisively at 25-11 in favor of the Blue Devils, capped by a sequence of attack errors from the Pirates, solidifying their dominant start.

KCKCC dominated the second set, winning 25-16. Tatianna Murray led the charge with multiple kills, including an early pair that contributed to a 5-0 start. Veronica Rolando was instrumental in setting up Murray and others, such as Hunter, who added to the lead with a kill at 9-2. Despite a brief resurgence from Independence, highlighted by a service ace, KCKCC maintained control. The set concluded with a service error from the Pirates, sealing the 25-16 victory for the Blue Devils.

KCKCC started the third set with a commanding 6-0 run, highlighted by consecutive service aces from Veronica Rolando. The Pirates called a timeout to regroup, but KCKCC maintained their momentum. Hunter and Pridgett each contributed multiple kills, bolstering KCKCC's lead to 20-10. Despite a few errors allowing the Pirates to slightly narrow the gap, Ava Johnson's kill, assisted by Chavi Krehbiel, sealed the set for the Blue Devils with a 25-15 victory.

Hunter excelled with a 1.000 hitting percentage, achieving nine kills on nine attempts and contributing significantly at the net with five total blocks. Pridgett was effective offensively, posting nine kills with a .692 hitting percentage over three sets. Veronica Rolando was instrumental in setting up the offense, dishing out 15 assists while also recording a perfect hitting percentage with two kills on two attempts. Her sister in crime, Valentina, showcased her defensive skills, collecting 12 digs and adding two block assists.

The No. 2 Blue Devils will return to action Oct. 8, when they host the Labette Community College Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. inside Breidenthal Court at the KCKCC Fieldhouse. The match will also feature the program's "Barefoot for Barefeet" shoe drive theme night.
