The No. 5 Kansas City Kansas Community College volleyball team swept the Highland Community College Scotties 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 Oct. 29 at Breidenthal Court. KCKCC tallied 12 service aces, contributing significantly to their commanding victory. The Blue Devils also recorded 56 digs, effectively neutralizing the Scotties' offensive efforts. The victory secured Head Coach Mary Bruno Ballou and her team, the KJCCC Championship. It's the first time since 2000.
KCKCC opened the first set with strong offensive execution, led by Veronica Rolando and Tatianna Murray, who each contributed early kills. Despite a brief tie at 3-3, they maintained momentum with a service ace from Ava Johnson, extending their lead to 6-4. Highland responded with a series of points, including a kill by Harlee Blackwell, but KCKCC's Valentina Rolando consistently capitalized on errors and effective attacks, pushing the score to 19-11. The Scotties made a late push with a service ace and several kills, narrowing the gap to 19-15. However, KCKCC regained control, with Valentina Rolando and Sanoma Hunter sealing the set with decisive plays, concluding the set at 25-17.
The Blue Devils secured the second set with a 25-20 victory over the Scotties. The set saw significant contributions from Valentina Rolando, who recorded multiple kills, including the decisive point at the end of the set. Hunter also played a pivotal role, delivering a series of key kills, including one that pushed the score to 24-20. Veronica Rolando was instrumental in facilitating the offense with several assists, and she also added a service ace.
The Scotties initially took a lead with a strong start by Honeyman, who contributed three kills to put them ahead 9-7. However, KCKCC responded with a series of plays involving Valentine Rolando, who scored four consecutive kills to bring the score to 18-16 in favor of KCKCC. Briazia Osborne then dominated the service line with three successive aces, extending the lead to 23-18. The set concluded with a block by Avery Bejan and Mayah Pridgett, sealing a 25-18 victory for the No.5 Blue Devils.
Valentina Rolando led the team with 21 kills on 41 attempts and added 12 digs, contributing significantly to her team's performance. Veronica Rolando provided strong support with 31 assists and four service aces, enhancing the offensive setup. Hunter was effective at the net, posting nine kills on 18 attempts and four block assists. Johnson was efficient from the service line with three aces and contributed 11 digs defensively. Ava Rann held the back line down with a team-high 18 digs.
The Blue Devils will move on to the opening round of the 2025 NJCAA DII Plains District A Volleyball Tournament as the No. 1 seed. They will host the No. 7 Labette Community College Cardinals Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Breidenthal Court in the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
