The Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team fell to the No. 3 Johnson County Community College Cavaliers, 78-59 on Saturday at the JCCC Gymnasium. KCKCC led briefly in the first half by six points, but the Cavaliers responded with a strong performance, particularly from beyond the arc, where they shot 40%. The Blue Devil defense recorded 10 steals, contributing to 12 points off turnovers.
The first half opened with a quick exchange of 3-pointers, as Kamoni Ford responded to an early long-range shot from Johnson County. Ford was instrumental in the offensive efforts, hitting three 3-pointers in the half and contributing to a narrow lead at various points. The Blue Devils maintained their presence in the paint, scoring 16 points inside and showing resilience with multiple lead changes. Despite KCKCC efforts, JCCC surged ahead late in the half with a 9-point lead at 43 seconds left. The half ended with the visiting team trailing 42–33.
In the second half, KCKCC fought hard to narrow the gap, with Anthony Leonard contributing significantly, including a crucial 3-pointer at 8:52. Despite their efforts, the Cavaliers maintained the upper hand, extending their lead to 21 points by the end of the half. The game concluded with a score of 78-59 in favor of the Cavaliers.
Leonard scored 13 points and recorded four steals, demonstrating his impact on both ends of the court. Ford contributed significantly with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and added five rebounds. Malik Lewis added 10 points and collected five rebounds, while also contributing two steals to the defensive effort. Darren McHenry posted eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, showing strong presence in the paint.
The next game for the Blue Devils is against the Highland Community College Scotties at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at Breidenthal Court in the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
