The Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team fell to the No. 3 undefeated Johnson County Community College Cavaliers, 61-57 in a closely contested matchup Wednesday at Breidenthal Court. The Blue Devils led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but the Cavaliers surged with a 39-point second half to secure the victory. Despite forcing 20 turnovers and recording 10 steals, KCKCC was unable to maintain its early advantage.
The Blue Devils began the game by establishing an early lead with a series of strong plays in the paint and effective transitions. Darren McHenry's layup and dunk, both assisted by Ta'Veaion Washington, helped build momentum. KCKCC expanded their lead to 16 points at 4:53 with a layup from Washington. The Blue Devils capitalized on the Cavaliers' 12 turnovers, converting them into 11 points off turnovers. The first half ended with KCKCC leading 33–22.
Despite the strong Blue Devil start to the second half, they faced a challenging stretch as the Cavaliers cut into the lead. A critical turning point came when JCCC regained the advantage on a layup by Gavin Harvey at 12:17, part of a run that extended their lead.
KCKCC responded by narrowing the gap, with Ali Booker contributing crucial points, including a fast-break layup at 8:34. However, a late surge by the Cavaliers, capped by Harvey's 3-pointer at 42 seconds, secured a 61–57 victory for the Cavaliers.
McHenry posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Washington scored 11 points and recorded three steals. Andrew Tiemeyer contributed five assists and two steals. Anthony Leonard added eight points and two steals.
The next game for the Blue Devils is against the Highland Community College Scotties at 3 p.m. Feb. 14 in Highland, Kan.
