The Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team defeated Labette Community College, 77-65 Saturday at Breidenthal Court. KCKCC built a 16-point lead midway through the second half, capitalizing on 22 points from turnovers. Labette managed to cut the deficit to three in the first half but couldn't sustain the momentum in the second, trailing by as much as 16 points.
The first half began with KCKCC establishing an early lead, highlighted by Malik Lewis's 3-pointer at 17:01 to push the score to 9-5. The Cardinals responded with a counter, seizing a brief 11-point lead at 4:32. However, KCKCC's resilience was evident as Ta'Veaion Washington's 3-pointer at 1:36 tied the game at 35. Anthony Leonard then closed the half with a crucial 3-pointer at the buzzer, propelling the Blue Devils to a 40–37 lead.
KCKCC surged ahead with a dominant performance in the second half, extending its lead to as much as 16 points at the 3:42 mark. The Blue Devils excelled in the paint, scoring 26 points, and emphasized a strong defensive presence, securing 21 rebounds. Lewis contributed significantly with a 3-pointer and a fast-break dunk, while Darren McHenry added key points with a dunk and a layup. Despite the Cardinals' efforts, including four 3-pointers, KCKCC maintained control to end the game with a 77-65 lead.
Lewis scored 18 points, converting 7-9 field goals and adding three rebounds. McHenry recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, making 7-13 shots. Washington added 12 points while collecting eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. Jameson Fischer contributed 13 points and four assists, connecting on 6-12 field goal attempts.
The next game for the Blue Devils is against the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in Fort Scott, Kan.
