No.19 Softball Splits with No. 22 Tritons in Season Opener

Kansas City Kansas Community College faced off against Iowa Central Community College in a doubleheader Wednesday, resulting in a loss in the first game, 7-2, and a victory in the second game, 2-0.

In the first game, KCKCC managed eight hits but was unable to overcome Iowa Central's five-run third inning. Rebecca Castillo started and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs and recording one strikeout with no walks. Alaina Mendez provided relief with three innings, yielding three hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Makayla Ekis contributed 1.2 innings, giving up four hits, three runs and one walk. Collectively, the pitchers faced 33 batters, with Mendez leading in strikeouts. Brenli Baker recorded two hits, including a double and added one RBI, achieving an OPS of 1.667. Mary Stephens contributed two hits and scored a run, finishing with a 1.000 OPS. Paige Smith tallied two hits, one RBI, and earned a walk, posting an OPS of 2.000.

In the second game, the KCKCC pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout, striking out five batters across seven innings. Castillo delivered a strong performance, pitching four innings without allowing a run, conceding only four hits while striking out one batter. Castillo's control was evident with only one walk issued across 16 batters faced, contributing to a WHIP of 1.25 in the game. Mendez entered as a reliever and was effective over three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters, achieving a WHIP of 0.33 and securing the save. The combined efforts of Castillo and Mendez ensured that the Tritons were held scoreless throughout the contest. Sidney Sullivan contributed with a double and scored a run, showcasing a solid performance at the plate. Baker also recorded a double and scored a run while adding a crucial out from behind the plate with two assists and one caught stealing. Kaitlyn Cowan drove in a run with a triple, finishing with one hit in the game.
