The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team faced Northeastern Oklahoma AM College in a doubleheader on Monday, securing a 2-0 victory in the first game but falling 0-7 in the second.
In the first game, the Blue Devil's pitching staff combined for a shutout, allowing five hits over seven innings while striking out one. Rebecca Castillo pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two hits, issuing one walk, and conceding no earned runs. Alaina Mendez came in as a relief pitcher, delivering 4.2 innings and giving up three hits while striking out one batter. The combined effort of Castillo and Mendez resulted in no runs scored against KCKCC, highlighting their effective performance on the mound.
Brenli Baker made a strong contribution by recording two hits and driving in two runs. Mary Stephens added a hit and scored a run, while also executing a sacrifice hit.
In the second game, KCKCC managed only two hits and issued three walks, while NEO A&M capitalized on a five-run second inning to secure the win.
Rebecca Castillo started for the Blue Devils, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out one and walking one. Gabby Pemberton took over in relief, delivering a more extended performance of 5.2 innings. She conceded two earned runs on five hits, showcasing her ability to stabilize the game after a challenging start.
Sidney Sullivan contributed with a hit in her sole appearance. Paige Smith also added a hit while striking out once. Kaitlyn Cowan demonstrated discipline at the plate by drawing two walks.
The next series for the Blue Devils will be at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 16 against the Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds in Concordia, Kan.
