The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team faced off against Labette Community College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, resulting in a split. In the first game, the Blue Devils fell to the Cardinals with a final score of 5–7. Despite taking an early lead with a run in the first inning, they were unable to fend off a series of scoring innings from Labette.
In the first game, Rebecca Castillo pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out one and walking one. Alaina Mendez entered in relief, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up three earned runs on three hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. Mendez also allowed one home run and hit two batters. Both pitchers combined for a total of six earned runs over the course of seven innings.
Kaitlyn Cowan led KCKCC with a strong offensive performance, recording two hits and two RBIs, including a triple. Brenli Baker contributed by scoring one run and adding one RBI while successfully catching a base stealer from her position behind the plate. Austyn Hartman reached base with a walk and stole a base, adding a run to her team's total.
In the second game, the Blue Devils secured a 6–4 victory over the Cardinals. They clinched the win with a decisive four-run surge in the seventh inning, highlighted by Sidney Sullivan's dramatic walk-off home run.
Gabby Pemberton delivered a complete game performance, pitching all 7.0 innings for KCKCC. She allowed seven hits and four runs, with three of those being earned. Pemberton recorded three strikeouts and issued just one walk during her outing. Despite giving up runs, her ability to go the distance was a notable achievement in the game.
Mary Stephens scored three runs and collected two hits. Sullivan posted three RBIs and hit a home run, capping off the game with her walk-off in the seventh inning. Baker recorded two hits and drove in one run.
The next series for the Blue Devils will be at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 25 against the Cowley College Tigers in Arkansas City, Kan.
