Blue Devils Hijack the Pirates’ Ship in Road Sweep

The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team triumphed in a doubleheader against Independence Community College, winning the first game decisively 17–6, followed by a solid 9–1 victory in the second game.

In the first game, KCKCC showcased a powerful offensive performance, amassing 14 hits and scoring eight runs in the opening inning. Alaina Mendez started on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out two and issuing four walks. Rebecca Castillo came in as a relief pitcher, contributing 2.2 innings with two strikeouts but allowing five runs, two of them earned, on five hits and two walks. The pitching staff faced challenges with a total of six walks throughout the game.

Mary Stephens was a standout, scoring three runs and adding two RBIs. Brenli Baker made a significant impact with four RBIs and a double, while Kaitlyn Cowan hit a home run, collecting two RBIs and scoring twice. Paige Smith also contributed with three hits and two runs scored, providing consistent offensive support.

In the second game, Gabby Pemberton pitched a complete game for KCKCC, covering 5.0 innings. She allowed seven hits and one earned run while issuing two walks and striking out one batter. Despite giving up a solo home run, Pemberton maintained control to finish the game strong.

Stephens continued her impressive form, recording three hits and scoring three runs. Cowan drove in three runs with a home run, showcasing her power at the plate. Smith also added to the scoring with two hits and two RBIs, playing a key role in the lineup.

The next series for the Blue Devils will be at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. May 2 against the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens at the KCKCC Softball Field.
