Blue Devils Open Up Tournament Play with Extra Inning Win

The No.3 Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team edged out the No.6 Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds with a 7–6 victory in the opening round of the 2026 DII Softball Region VI Tournament.

The close contest was highlighted by two home runs from the Blue Devils, which contributed to their 13-hit performance.

Rebecca Castillo pitched 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs, while walking six and striking out two, with a total of 122 pitches thrown, 68 of which were strikes. Alaina Mendez came in as a substitute and pitched 3.0 innings, giving up only one hit and one walk, while striking out five batters. Mendez threw 44 pitches with 31 strikes and secured her eighth win of the season.

Mary Stephens recorded five hits in the game, showcasing her effectiveness at the plate. Kaitlyn Cowan also powered a home run and collected two RBIs, adding to the scoring efforts. Paige Smith stole two bases and tallied an RBI, further advancing the team's offensive strategy. Sidney Sullivan contributed significantly with two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs including a walk-off winner in the bottom of the tenth inning.
